Open Mike Eagle’s new album, Brick Physique Children Nonetheless Daydream, is closely influenced by the legacy of the Robert Taylor Properties, a former public housing undertaking on the South Facet of Chicago, which was unceremoniously torn down in 2007. (As we speak, all that continues to be on the website is a barren area.) Mike grew up in Chicago and infrequently hung out with household dwelling within the Properties. Upon revisiting the town and the previous website of the Properties later in life, he was struck by the dearth of commemoration for the hundreds of residents who lived and died within the Properties. The belief that nothing remained in that area impressed the theme of the album.
For the inaugural episode of AV Docs, The A.V. Membership spent a day with Open Mike Eagle on the website of the previous Properties in Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood, exploring its legacy to grasp the inspiration behind his new album.
